Every debate format lives and dies by the clock. In policy debate, each side delivers eight minute constructive speeches and four or five minute rebuttals, with three minute cross examination periods in between. Lincoln Douglas gives the affirmative a six minute constructive, the negative a seven minute constructive, then rebuttals of four, six, and three minutes, all inside about thirteen minutes of speaking time per debater. Public forum runs shorter four minute constructives with three minute crossfire and a two minute final focus. Cross Examination and Prep Time Clock

Timing in debate is not only about the speeches. Cross examination runs three minutes in most high school formats, and prep time is a resource each side spends carefully, roughly five to eight minutes in policy, four minutes per debater in Lincoln Douglas, and three minutes in public forum. Because prep is used in pieces across the round, you need a clock you can start and stop cleanly without losing the remaining balance. Use the count down mode for a fixed speech and pause it the instant a debater is done. Keeping cross examination and prep on separate, visible timers makes every round fair and easy to judge.
